Well Louisiana, we finally have a third to last national ranking in something that should make you happy! Louisiana is ranked 48th of 50 when it comes to the effective property tax rate on your residence. Some of these statistics were surprising – Delaware’s rates are lower than Illinois, for example. Memories of my time in Chicago a while back include many filings for folks who owned modest homes but had very high tax assessments that often exceeded $10,000. For all those who are considering a move to Texas to avoid personal income taxes, you might want to think again. Texas is ranked 6th for their effective property tax rates. Because Texas has no income tax, the property taxes are much higher in order to raise the revenue required to provide government services.
This map cuts through this clutter of a variety of property taxing methods, presenting effective tax rates on owner-occupied housing. This is the average amount of residential property tax actually paid, expressed as a percentage of home value. Some states with high property taxes, like New Hampshire and Texas, rely heavily on property taxes in lieu of other major tax categories; others, like New Jersey and Illinois, impose high property taxes alongside high rates in the other major tax categories.
