IRS Watchdog Warns Against Agency Impersonators

The IRS watchdog has sent out a warning to taxpayers involving the “largest scam of its kind.”

Impersonators are calling taxpayers and demanding immediate payments with a pre-paid debit card, wire transfer, or cash. These impersonators often know the last 4 digits of the victims’ Social Security numbers and threaten to arrest, deport or remove their driving privileges…these are things the IRS has no authority to do!

The IRS rarely telephones a taxpayer.They will always send, via US mail, several notices before calling a taxpayer. If you do receive a call, always ask for an Agent ID # or a return phone number. You can also tell them to call your accountant and let them handle it.
